Common questions about NFC product authentication
How does NFC product authentication work?
Each unit is given its own NFC tag carrying a unique encrypted token. Tapping the tag with an NFC-capable smartphone opens a verification page, which decrypts the token, looks that unit up, and returns a verdict for that one item. No two units share an identity, so the answer describes the exact thing in your hand rather than the batch, the model, or the brand.
Does the customer need an app to check a product?
No. Tapping the tag opens a web page in the phone’s own browser, so there is nothing to install and no account to create. The person checking sees one verdict: authentic, expired, recalled, suspended, out-of-market, or not genuine. An NFC-capable smartphone is needed to read the tag — most current handsets have the hardware built in.
What happens if someone copies the tag?
Copying a tag does not create a second genuine unit; it creates a duplicate of one unit’s identity. Every tap is recorded with a time and a place, so a unit tapped far more often than one unit plausibly could be, or tapped outside the markets its brand sells into, is raised as an alert in the monitoring centre for the brand to act on. Units on Sentinel Secure add a further layer, where the chip itself rejects a replayed code outright.
What is the difference between counterfeiting and diversion?
A counterfeit is a unit the brand never made. Diversion is a genuine unit sold into one market and resold in another. Both cost the brand and both look identical on a shelf. Unit-level authentication separates them: a counterfeit has no valid identity to return, while a diverted unit verifies as genuine but taps from outside the geography it was released into.
Which products is unit-level authentication worth it for?
It is used for goods where a convincing fake causes real harm or real loss — injectables and clinical products, cosmetics and skincare, medical devices, fragrance, and premium consumer goods. The economics turn on unit value and on whether the buyer can inspect the product themselves. Low-value items a customer can judge by eye rarely justify tagging each one.
What does the brand see that the customer does not?
The customer sees a single verdict. The brand’s own team sees the record behind it: each scan with its time and place, which batch the unit belongs to and which markets its brand sells into, and alerts raised when a scan pattern looks wrong. Recalls and suspensions are applied centrally and take effect on the next tap, without waiting for stock to be physically retrieved.
